Spectacle Island

One of the things on my to do list, is to take the ferry from Boston over to Spectacle Island. The Island is about 4 miles off shore. I have heard that there is an incredible amount of sea glass on the island. Spectacle Island has quite a history. It was a fishing spot for Native Americans, then it became a small pox quarantine, next a location for illegal gambling, followed by a horse rendering plant until it finally became the spot for trash incineration. Once the incinerator closed, people just continued to dump trash on the island. Because it was once a landfill, it is now a good place to find sea glass and other artifacts. Today, Spectacle Island forms part of Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area.
