Sea Glass Jewelry on Gold-Filled or Gold Plated?

yellow pendant on gold filled 001 I have always used sterling silver to make my sea glass necklaces and earrings. Lately, however, I have been having fun experimenting with gold-filled chain and findings. Gold seems to be making a come back. At a recent craft fair I had one sea glass necklace on a gold-filled chain and one sea glass necklace on a gold plated chain. Someone asked me what the difference was between the two, and I was embarrassed to say I didn't know. I do now though! Gold plated jewelry has less of a percentage of gold. It goes through a process where a base metal is dipped into a solution containing gold. An electric current is applied and the reaction which occurs causes a thin layer of gold to be applied to the metal. Gold-filled jewelry has more gold in it. Gold is pressure bonded to the other metal. It is more tarnish resistant. It is also regulated by the government. Brass is the most common gold filled metal. Never take your gold jewelry into a pool or spa. Whether your sea glass jewelry is made of sterling silver or gold-filled you can be sure it will be beautiful!
